Welcome…

…and selamat datang! (that’s Malay for welcome!) The Phoenix has been prominent to the Bristol Pub scene for generations, since 1850 to be exact! It is still alive and kicking today! Being the only pub right next to Bristol’s Cabot Circus, it is virtually the only place in Cabots to have proper home cooked food and a good selection of quality, locally produced ales (our breweries are all Bristol born and bred…or from around the vicinity) as well as crisp imported lager. On top of that we are the only very few places in Bristol that welcomes families with children and pets. Did we also mention we are a friendly establishment that only discriminate towards discrimination?! Everyone else is welcome with open arms (in our case open wings)map

Some of our other features…

  • Large sun trapped beer garden
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Business, conference and meeting room hire
  • Free venue hire for parties, leaving do, christenings etc
  • 10% students discounts

Proper Malaysian hawker noodles

PadThai ala central Thailand

(ala Central Thailand means it has a slight kick of chilli!)

This is world famous and does not require any introductions! However what most don’t know is that every part and region makes it in their own way. Typical of Malaysian taste buds, this Lopburi style has a sprinkle of chilli flake to give a kick above the neck like a pro Thai kick boxer! Not too much but enough to make a difference!

Thai fried flat rice noodles with beansprouts, tofu and egg topped with Chinese chives and served with a side of peanuts and lime wedge

Vegetarian £7.50 ; Chicken / Calamari / Fish cake £8.30 ; Mixed £9.50

Cantonese Chow Mein Malaysian style

Cantonese is one of the many dialects in the Chinese language mostly spoken in Hong-Kong where the British sent off some of the locals to Malaya to work in the mining industry. Luckily they brought their culinary skills with them and this is a non-spicy flavour packed dish based on the mouth-watering Shaoxing rice wine

Cantonese style egg noodle, seasonal green veg, carrots and mushroom in thick gravy

Vegetarian £7.50 ; Chicken / Calamari / Fish cake £8.30 ; Mixed £9.50

Penang Island Kuey Teow Goreng

Penang Island was the hub for the British colony back in the day and it is now a world heritage site. It is said that the food gave its credits to UNESCO and we are proud to plate it up here!

Chinese stir-fried flat rice noodles with tofu, green veg, beansprouts, egg, ground chillies and sweet soy sauce served with lime wedge

Vegetarian £7.50 ; Chicken / Calamari / Fish cake £8.30 ; Mixed £9.50

Melaka Nyonya Kari Laksa

It comes spicy as it is. Not suitable for amateurs!

Nyonya in this context means a cultural mix (peranakan) of Chinese and Malay infused together after decades of intercultural marriages in the state of Malacca. Typically Malaysian thanks to the British colony that brought these two heritages together to create a truly Malaysian Identity exemplified in this iconic dish of a coconut based
Malaysian curry soup dish served over egg noodles, boiled egg, beansprouts, green veg, green beans, tofu, fresh chopped chillies and lime wedge

Vegetarian £7.50 ; Chicken / Calamari / Fish cake £8.30 ; Mixed £9.50

Mee Goreng Mamak

Mamak is peranakan of Malays and South Indians. As you can tell by now, what makes Malaysia Truly Asia is its cocktail of different Asian ethnic cultures brought together and mixed in to create a unique identity. This here dish is close to home as I am a mamak and it’s my comfort food. Malays and Indians have always had a close relationship and its best (to my opinion) produce is this dish.
Fresh egg noodles fried with a concoction of soy sauces, chilli paste, and tomato based sauce with fresh bean sprouts, tofu then topped off with a fried egg. Simply delicious!

Vegetarian £7.50 ; Chicken / Calamari / Fish cake £8.30 ; Mixed £9.50
